Role-Playing Cards - Getting Acquainted – Dutch allow students to practice situations in which they introduce themselves and learn to talk about themselves. They practice sharing their name, age, and background, as well as discussing their hobbies, favorite travels, and other personal interests. Additionally, they learn how to ask similar questions to others to initiate a conversation and show interest.
Students further practice asking about the interests, place of residence, and work of the other person. They learn how to keep their stories short and clear, but also to listen well to what the other person is saying. This helps them develop skills to make contact in a friendly way and find conversation topics.
The role-plays also include challenging, comedic situations. For example, a student might introduce themselves in detail, only to discover they are talking to the wrong person! In another scenario, the person smiles politely while the student talks but does not speak the language at all. This can lead to funny confusion and teaches students to respond flexibly.
Another example involves a student enthusiastically talking about their hobbies and travel experiences, only to notice that the other person is very curt in their responses or keeps looking at their watch. This prompts the student to practice how to steer the conversation or end it.
These role-plays prepare students for various introductory conversations, from informal meetings to work-related introductions. They learn to confidently talk about themselves, ask questions, and respond flexibly when a conversation takes an unexpected turn. This way, they practice their social and communication skills in a playful and educational manner.
